Easy Baked Mozzarella Sticks Recipe

Hot baked mozzarella sticks with a crispy seasoned breadcrumb coating. A lighter, oven-baked take on the classic fried snack, perfect for parties or a quick appetizer.

  • 12 sticks part-skim reduced sodium mozzarella string cheese cut in half to make 24 pieces
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 5 tbsp Italian seasoned breadcrumbs or gluten-free breadcrumbs
  • 5 tbsp panko crumbs
  • 2 tsp parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp dried parsley
  • spray olive oil cooking spray used for baking sheet and tops of sticks

Preparation Steps

  • Cut cheese sticks in half to create 24 pieces and freeze until solid.
  • Whisk the egg in a small bowl. Place the flour in a separate dish.
  • Combine breadcrumbs, panko, parmesan cheese, and dried parsley in another bowl.
  • Dip frozen cheese pieces in flour, shaking off any excess, then dip in beaten egg, and finally coat with the breadcrumb mixture.
  • Place coated cheese sticks on a wax paper-lined tray. Freeze again for at least 1 hour to firm up.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and lightly spray with olive oil cooking spray.
  • Place frozen mozzarella sticks on the prepared baking sheet. Spray tops lightly with cooking spray.
  • Bake in the lower third of the oven for 4 to 5 minutes until the bottoms are crisp.
  • Turn sticks over and bake an additional 4 to 5 minutes, watching carefully to prevent melting.

Notes

For best results, do not skip the freezing steps to keep sticks from melting during baking. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
