Classic Buttermilk Scones

These classic buttermilk scones are incredibly tender and flaky, with a hint of sweetness. Perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea.

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.33 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup cold unsalted butter cut into cubes
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten

Instructions
 

Making the Scones

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and beaten egg.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 0.75-inch thick round.
  • Cut the dough into 8 wedges using a sharp knife or bench scraper.
  • Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with butter, jam, or clotted cream. These are best enjoyed fresh.
