Prep : 10 Total : 25 minutes

Ingredients

Donut Dough

  • 2.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.33 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted

Cinnamon Sugar Topping

  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  • In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for a minute or two until it forms a soft dough.
  • Roll out the dough to about 0.5 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two different sized round cutters to cut out donuts.
  • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully fry the donuts in batches for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  • Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain any excess oil.
  • While the donuts are still warm, melt the 0.5 cup of butter in a small bowl.
  • In a shallow dish, combine the 1 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon for the topping.
  • Dip each warm donut into the melted butter, letting any excess drip off, then dredge it in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  • Serve immediately.
