Instructions
Preparation Steps
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for a minute or two until it forms a soft dough.
Roll out the dough to about 0.5 inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two different sized round cutters to cut out donuts.
Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
Carefully fry the donuts in batches for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain any excess oil.
While the donuts are still warm, melt the 0.5 cup of butter in a small bowl.
In a shallow dish, combine the 1 cup of sugar and 2 tablespoons of cinnamon for the topping.
Dip each warm donut into the melted butter, letting any excess drip off, then dredge it in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
Serve immediately.
Notes
These donuts are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
