Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Pour in the buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.
    3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 0.75-inch thick rectangle. Fold the dough in half, then pat it down again. Repeat this folding and patting process 2 more times for extra flakiness.
  • Cut the dough into 12 biscuits using a 2-inch round cutter. Dip the cutter in flour between each cut.
  • Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, about 1 inch apart.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
  • Serve warm, with butter or your favorite toppings.

Notes

These biscuits are best served fresh. They can be made ahead and reheated.
