Old Fashioned Goulash is a timeless family favorite, combining tender ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato-based sauce. This simple, hearty dish is perfect for feeding a crowd or enjoying as leftovers. It’s a nostalgic recipe that’s easy to make and sure to please everyone at the table.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup elbow macaroni
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp salt, or to taste
  • ½ tsp black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Directions

  1. Cook the Beef: Heat a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics: Add the diced onion and garlic to the skillet with the beef. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened.
  3. Add the Liquids: Stir in the beef broth, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  4. Season and Add Pasta: Stir in the basil, oregano, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Add the elbow macaroni and mix well.
  5. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the goulash simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and the flavors are well combined.
  6. Optional Cheese Topping: If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the goulash and let it melt before serving.
  7. Serve: Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Substitutions: Ground turkey or chicken can be used instead of beef for a lighter option.
  • Add Veggies: Mix in chopped bell peppers, zucchini, or mushrooms for added flavor and nutrition.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
